Adolescent Health

 | Adolescent Mental Health Adolescence
is the time when one starts seeing oneself as an individual, and separate from one's
friends and family. Issues of sexuality and relationships come up at this point in one's
life and can be very difficult for the teenager to deal with. Poor self esteem, which is
relatively common in this age group, can result poor social, academic and occupational
functioning, and in depression and even suicide. Having self-confidence on the other hand,
puts one in a good position to access the opportunities available to one. Friends and
family are very important at this time of one's life.

 | Peer Education Peer education is the
providing of information, education and skills training from a person of the same age and
background as the person being educated. It has been shown that certain types of
information (e.g. issues of sex) are more likely to be obtained from peers (friends of the
same age). Peer education uses this principle to get across important health messages.

 | Family Planning Every couple should
have the right to decide how many children they want and what time in their lives they
want to have them. The woman should have control on the number of children she wants to
have, and there should not be excessive undue influence from extended family and one's
community. Families need to know where to access resources to enable them to plan their
family effectively.

 | Women's Empowerment Women's
empowerment aims to provide women with education, skills and resources to take control of
their lives and that of their families. World Bank studies show that in areas affected by
poverty, the quality of life of one's family is more likely to improve in investment is
made in the women of the community than in the men of the community. This area also deals
with issues of gender equality.

 | Young Mothers Teenage pregnancy
is a problem in countries all over the world, with women still in their teens having to
give birth to and start raising children, even if they are not ready emotionally,
physically, and economically to raise children. There is also a great deal of stigma
attached in some cultures to teenage pregnancy. Issues involved include prevention of
teenage pregnancy and finding resources to assist these young moms.
